List of Verbs: 1200 English Verbs from A to Z

List of Verbs: 1200 English Verbs from A to Z

Looking for a complete list of verbs? You are in the right place.

A verb expresses an action (run), a mental activity (think), or a state of being (exist). In English, the verb controls the tense and meaning of every sentence you write.

Below you will find verbs organized alphabetically from A to Z, plus specific lists for:

  • Regular and irregular verbs (for correct past tense formation)
  • Linking verbs (connecting subjects to descriptions)
  • Phrasal verbs (verb + preposition combinations)
  • Action verbs for cooking, sports, and classroom settings

What is a Verb?

A verb is a word that expresses an action, a state, or an occurrence. It tells what the subject does, what happens to the subject, or what the subject is.

A verb can show physical action, such as run, write, or jump. It can also show mental action, such as think, believe, or remember. In addition, a verb can describe a state of being, such as be, seem, or become.

Every complete sentence requires at least one verb because it forms the core of the predicate. Without a verb, a group of words cannot function as a complete sentence.

How to Use Verbs Correctly in Sentences

To use verbs correctly in sentences, match the verb with the subject, choose the correct tense, and place it properly within the sentence structure.

First, ensure subject and verb agree in number. A singular subject takes a singular verb, and a plural subject takes a plural verb. For example, “She runs” is correct, while “She run” is not.

Second, select the correct tense to show time. Use present tense for general facts, past tense for completed actions, and future forms for upcoming actions. The verb form must clearly reflect when the action happens.

Third, keep verb forms consistent within a sentence unless the time changes. Shifting tense without reason creates confusion.

Finally, use the correct verb form after auxiliary verbs such as is, have, or will. For example, “She is running,” “They have finished,” and “He will go” follow proper verb patterns.
